Vishara

Traditional Indian Skincare. No Parabens, No Sulphates.

About Vishara

Most personal care products on Indian supermarket shelves — even those positioned as gentle or family-friendly — contain sodium lauryl sulphate (the foaming agent that strips skin barrier), parabens (preservatives linked to endocrine disruption), and synthetic fragrance (an umbrella term that can cover hundreds of unlisted chemical compounds). Sharanya Gopalakrishnan didn't know this until a conversation while shopping in 2018 changed how she read ingredient labels. What she found in the products she'd been using on her children pushed her to start making her own — and Vishara, based in Chennai, came from that.

The ingredient approach is traditional Indian materials matched to modern skincare functions. Vetiver root (known in Tamil Nadu as khus) as a toner — a cooling, astringent herb that South Indian households have used for centuries, now largely displaced by synthetic toners in the mass market. Goat milk as a cleanser — it contains lactic acid naturally, making it a gentle exfoliant without chemical actives. Turmeric with ceramide in a night cream, tulsi and green tea in a hyaluronic acid gel, vitamin C with spirulina in a face mask. Traditional ingredients alongside actives that contemporary skin routines require. All products are made in small batches, free from parabens, sulphates, and synthetic fragrance, packaged in biodegradable or reusable materials.

The personal care range covers face, hair, and body — cleansers, toners, night cream, face mask, hair tonic, hair serum, body wash, body butter, lip balm, soaps, and an underarm detox pack. Worth a note on the soy wax candles and wardrobe sachets: most candles in India are paraffin — a petroleum byproduct that releases carcinogenic compounds when burnt. Soy wax burns clean. It's a quiet swap that most candle buyers don't think about.

Small Chennai operation, D2C-first. No third-party certification on the natural claims — the brand's transparency on ingredients is the verification. Worth checking the ingredient list on specific products before buying, which the brand actively encourages.
